Car Body Aero Kits
Car Body/Aero Kits
By Mark Jones
Want to make your car or truck turn heads everywhere you go? Don’t want to mess with the mechanicals and have to worry about disturbing something that may void your warranty?
Body kits have been around for decades, but are now very much mainstream. They are also sometimes called aero kits and ground effects when referring to spoilers, wings and skirts. Many are designed to retro-fit onto specific vehicles like they were made by the factory that built the car. Often an afternoon of fitting a few panels is all that is needed to transform the family grocery-getter into a street racer, at least in the way it looks.
Many kits are made of fiberglass and come finished in gel coat and can be left as is, or painted to match, or accent, the existing body color. Urethane is another material that is used for its flexibility and resiliency. It weighs a bit more than the composite materials, but usually adds very little if any extra weight to the vehicle.
Very common now and regarded by many as ultra cool, is the raw carbon fiber look, a composite like fiberglass, but lighter and stronger in many ways. Hoods are the most common panels done up in carbon fiber, but deck lids, doors, wings, spoilers, fenders / flares, you name it, can be replaced or upgraded.
